DAVID ORTIZ – A FINAL LAP AROUND THE TRACK?

So, David Ortiz has announced that the upcoming season will be his last. The reason behind this announcement may have been to give all teams an opportunity to plan well in advance for a tribute day as he takes his final lap as a visiting player in each ballpark the Red Sox are scheduled to play in.

Really? In a way,  it doesn’t surprise me simply because ortiz-red-soxthis man apparently has a ego the size of his body mass. Get real David. You are not Derek Jeter. No way, no how. I mean can you imagine the fans in Houston (for example) checking the schedule to find out when Ortiz is coming to town? Fans did that for Jeter and virtually every game was sold out…..

Look, every player has a right to choose the way he will “go out”. Only a few actually get an opportunity to do that and often players find themselves on the wrong end of the waiver wire and their careers come to an abrupt end. Ortiz is one of those select few. But, he could have waited until the All Star break for example when he’s had a chance to assess his skills and gone on from there.

No doubt, the accolades that will come his way in late September at Fenway will be well earned and deserved. After all, he has been the backbone of their team for several years. He is (even) a marginal candidate for the Hall of Fame. His numbers dictate that he be given serious consideration.

So, go ahead David, take your victory lap. But don’t expect much from fans away from your home ballpark…….why…..because you simply haven’t earned it. And it’s not about the numbers, it’s about you!
